This is a bust of Francis Grenfell VC who as a Captain with the 9th Lancers with the BEF he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in an action on 24th August 1914.

The citation for the VC was very simple: “For gallantry in action against un-broken Infantry at Audregnies, Belgium, on 24th August, 1914, and for gallant conduct in assisting to save the guns of 119th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, near Doubon the same day.”
