Description
The bust is inspired by Lydia Alford, the first British service woman ever to be sent deliberately into a war zone, and is of a WAAF nursing orderly of the air evacuation unit in Normandy 1944 on D-Day+7.
Lydia also flew into the Arnham area to support those wounded during operation Market Garden.
Drawn from both the WAAF nursing orderlies and PMRAFNS Sisters they accompanied wounded soldiers when being repatriated to the UK from Normandy.
The bust depicts a corporal wearing RAF battledress and ‘Mae West’ with a navigator’s parachute harness, and consists of 4 parts: hat, head, torso and pedestal base.
